You’ll also be happy to know that since year 2010, getting certification and having your name listed in the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry has become so much easier as well as more affordable. That is – since the Nursing Assistant Registry of Utah no longer accepts personal checks or cash for all their fees.
According to the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry, the state has a Nursing Home Reform Act which was designed to improve the quality of care in all long-term health care facilities in the state. It also aims to define training & evaluation standards for nursing aides working in long-term facilities.
After taking CNA classes in Utah, nursing assistants will work with licensed nurses to provide utmost nursing care. As a nursing aide, it will be your duty to assist your patient with their daily living activities like dressing, bathing, feeding, toileting, transferring and ambulating. You will also be tasked to measure vital signs, range of motion and positioning. Though these responsibilities seem easy enough, state law mandates that to be a certified nursing aide, students must attend only an UNAR-approved training program and pass the UNAR-approved state test.
Completing CNA Classes in Utah – Getting Certified
Keep in mind that UTAH strictly upholds its certification policy. Before you can assume nursing assistant duties (after taking and passing CNA classes in Utah), you need a valid Utah CNA certificate. However, the state may also grant a one-time exception. Uncertified nursing assistants working in a licensed nursing facility can still be given a 120-day time frame (starting from the date of hire) to get initial certification.
It is also important to know that CNA training is usually valid for only one year. This means, tests should be completed within a year from the date when you completed your training. Once your training certificate is issued, you need to take the test within one year from the expiration date of your certification. You also need to renew your CNA certificate every two years. Renewal would require a proof of nursing / nursing-related duties. It should indicate that you are under the supervision of a licensed nurse and that you’ve completed at least 200 hours of nursing assistant duties at a licensed Utah facility.
Once you complete you CNA classes in Utah, you will need to take the NATCEP examination. This test measures the related knowledge, abilities and skills of the nursing assistant. It comprises of a written exam and a skills exam. For the written exam, it will consist of 100 multiple choice questions where you need to get at least a 57% score. For the skills exam, you will need to perform basic nursing aide tasks like checking vital signs, hand washing and other selected skills from the Skills Task Listing. The test determines if you fully understand the concepts and if you can safely perform the duties of an entry-level nursing aide. It is only by passing the two tests that your name can be listed on the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry.
